President Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is the most-visited historical destination in Hanoi. The Mausoleum was built to honor the greatest Vietnamese national hero: President Ho Chi Minh (1890 – 1969). He was a great revolutionary and a founder of Communist Party of Vietnam. He played one of the most important roles in the war between Vietnam and many strong invaders to lead the whole country to independence and reunification. President Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum – The meaningful symbol of Vietnamese national unification.

This structure was built to honor his great sacrifice and merits for all precious things he did for Vietnamese independence, for Vietnamese people, it was built with all the love and gratitude he deserved.

The process of building President Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum started on September 2, 1973 and finished on August 29, 1975.

This stunning structure is located in Ba Dinh Square, where President Ho Chi Minh read the Vietnamese Declarations of Independence in front of thousands people announcing the birth of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam – an emotional and meaningful event marking the most important step in the fight for Vietnamese independence from that moment on.

The materials used to build the Mausoleum from numerous types of precious plants, exterior special local granite to interior precious wood were collected from all the regions of the country. They all were donated by Vietnamese people with love and gratitude.

Building the Mausoleum was the only thing Vietnamese people did against President Ho Chi Minh’s will. On the day he passed away, he hoped we could cremate him and scatter his cremation all over the country. He wanted to become one part of the country’s land, he wanted to stay forever with all Vietnamese residents from all regions, he wanted to play a part in the future development of the country somehow by doing that.

President Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum was designed by combining Lenin Mausoleum’s architecture and distinctive architectural symbols of Vietnam.

It has three layers with the height of 21.6 meters and the width of 41.2 meter.

The portico standing out in front of the Mausoleum written that "Chủ tịch Hồ Chí Minh" (President Ho Chi Minh) was made from precious dark red jade stone which was brought from Cao Bang Province.

In the lobby of the Mausoleum, tourists could see a quote - "Không có gì quý hơn Độc lập Tự do" (means “Nothing is more precious than Independence and Freedom).

Moving on to the center of the Mausoleum, you could find the embalmed body of President Ho Chi Minh, which is kept within a glass coffin. There are four military honor soldiers guarding around it.

Outside of the Mausoleum, visitors could see two wildflowers on both sides in front of the door. Surrounding the whole structure are 79 cycas revolute, which are represented 79 years of life of President Ho Chi Minh.

Walking to the southern and northern sides of the Mausoleum, two ranges of bamboo would appear in your eyes’ view. Bamboo has long become a Vietnamese national symbol, so it is really meaningful designing the architecture adding this symbolic tree to the structure.

Nowadays, President Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is opened from 8.am to 11.am everyday except from Monday and Friday. October and November are usually the months for restoration and preservation so the Mausoleum is closed temporarily during this period of time.

Tourists do not need to pay any fees for visiting the Mausoleum, but they have to follow the rules strictly. Keeping silent and walking in two lines with no use of cameras, drinks or foods.

For all these reasons, President Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is a meaningful symbol of Vietnamese national unification definitely worth a visit.
